This December, we are proud to shine a spotlight on Little Heroes NI, an extraordinary charity transforming the lives of sick children and their families across Northern Ireland.
Little Heroes NI, formerly known as Helping Hand, was established in 1997 by the medical staff of the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Since then, it has played a vital role in supporting children undergoing treatment and the families who stand beside them. The charity raises money exclusively to support projects and needs within the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and focuses entirely on supporting sick children and their families and enriching the experience of young patients and enhancing the standard of care delivered at the hospital. Their work includes funding specialist medical equipment, improving hospital facilities, providing family-focused support, and advancing paediatric research and training. Through their efforts, they offer comfort and stability at a time when families need it most.
The impact of Little Heroes is felt every day within the walls of the Children's Hospital. Recent initiatives have included providing toys and play therapy tools to support treatment and rehabilitation, supplying a range of specialist life saving and life changing equipment including simulation equipment that helps medical professionals train for real-world scenarios, and offering practical assistance to families facing lengthy or complex care journeys. Their dedication ensures that no child or parent feels alone during a difficult chapter of their lives, and that healthcare professionals are equipped with the resources needed to deliver world-class care.
By securing a Little Heroes charity place in the 2026 Phoenix Energy Belfast City Marathon, runners have the opportunity to directly support the essential work of this amazing charity. Every mile completed and every pound raised will contribute to improving the lives of young patients, enhancing medical services, and giving families hope when they need it most. As Little Heroes relies entirely on the generosity of individuals, communities, and corporate partners, the funds raised through this event will have a deeply meaningful impact.
Running for Little Heroes is more than taking part in a race, it is a chance to champion compassion, resilience, and brighter futures for children across Northern Ireland. To register your interest in a place head to the charity tab at www.belfastcitymarathon.com
