The Phoenix Energy Belfast City Marathon is one of the largest and most memorable days in Belfast’s sporting calendar, but it doesn’t happen without the people behind the scenes who make the event run smoothly.
Each year, thousands of runners take on the challenge across the city, and the atmosphere, safety and overall experience on the day is powered by an incredible network of volunteers. As preparations continue for this year’s event, we are now welcoming expressions of interest from youth groups, schools, community organisations and companies who would like to be part of the team that helps bring the marathon to life.
We are currently recruiting volunteer teams to support some of the most important roles on the route, including water stations, energy stations and relay changeover points. These positions are crucial to keeping runners moving safely and confidently through the course. A friendly face at a water station can make all the difference to a runner who is pushing through a tough stretch, and a well-organised relay changeover point ensures teams can transition smoothly and stay focused on their race. Volunteers aren’t just providing practical support, they are also a key part of the encouragement and positivity that makes the Belfast City Marathon and Team Relay such a special experience for participants and spectators alike.
This year, we are especially keen to hear from groups who would like to take over a full volunteer section together. This can be a brilliant opportunity for schools, youth groups and company teams to come out as a collective and create a real presence on race day. Volunteering as a group means you can share the experience, support each other, and build team spirit while playing a visible and meaningful role in the event. For organisations and workplaces, it can also be a strong example of community involvement, showing support for a major local event and contributing to a positive day for Belfast.
Volunteering is hugely rewarding for the individuals who take part. Being involved gives you a front-row seat to an inspiring day where you’ll see personal goals being achieved, first marathons completed, relay teams celebrating together and the city coming alive with support. Many volunteers tell us they leave feeling energised, proud and more connected to Belfast and the people in it. It’s a chance to develop practical experience, build confidence, meet new people, and be part of something bigger than yourself. For young people in particular, volunteering can be a valuable experience to add to CVs, Duke of Edinburgh or community involvement records, while learning about teamwork, communication and responsibility in a fast-paced, positive environment.
If your school, youth group, organisation or company would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you. We can provide guidance on how group volunteering works, what to expect on the day, and how your team can take ownership of a station or section of the route. We’re looking forward to welcoming new and returning volunteers and working together to make race day another unforgettable celebration for Belfast.
