With this weekend’s marathon fast approaching, participants are being encouraged to prioritise their health and safety by recognising early warning signs and preparing appropriately for race-day conditions.
Organisers have highlighted key medical advice to help runners stay safe throughout the event, stressing the importance of listening to your body at all times. Symptoms such as severe cramping, headaches, blurred vision, unusual pain, or signs of heat exhaustion should never be ignored.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s your body’s way of telling you to slow down and take action organisers advise. Being aware of these warning signs can make all the difference on race day.
Current forecasts suggest temperatures could reach highs of around 13°C, with overcast conditions and the possibility of some sunshine. However, runners are reminded not to rely too heavily on the forecast, as weather conditions can change quickly.
As a result, participants are strongly encouraged to come prepared. Staying well-hydrated before, during, and after the race is essential, regardless of the temperature. Wearing appropriate clothing for variable conditions, such as light, breathable layers, is also recommended to help regulate body temperature.
Medical teams will be stationed along the route, but runners are urged to take personal responsibility for their wellbeing by pacing themselves sensibly and seeking assistance if needed.
Above all, the message is clear: stay aware, stay safe, and don’t ignore the signs your body is giving you.
